Reduce! Reuse! Recycle! You may forget about your rubbish the minute it is thrown in the bin, but it doesn’t just go away. Everything we discard, including items for recycling, have to be transported and processed. Non-recyclable rubbish will be burnt or sent to landfill. Reducing your household waste is an effective way in to reduce your carbon emissions.
Recycling
Recycling is good, but pre-cycling is even better! Take packaging and containers into account when you are shopping for food.
Food waste
About a quarter of all food purchased in the UK is thrown in the bin. Add to that the amount of organic waste – vegetable peelings, tea bags, coffee grounds, egg shells – that are produced by every household each week. If it ends up in landfill, organic waste produces methane, a greenhouse gas up to 300 times more damaging than carbon dioxide. It is possible to remove most, if not all organic matter from your household waste.
Reusing
Buying new is not always necessary. Think about sharing schemes for heavy DIY and gardening items as well as local and national recycling schemes.
