Swan deaths in Alresford - 2010 The most recent swan death was found along the Avenue/Winchester Road on the junction of New Farm Road. This swan was one of last year's cygnets. This death was very suspicious as it was found some distance away from the river and it was found to be headless - the dead swan was found on the grass verge. Further investigation by the RSPCA put the death down to a mink - a somewhat surprising conclusion but they must know what they are talking about. Call the Hampshire Police's non emergency number to report any further swan deaths If you see a dead swan - please report it to the Police non emergency number - 101. You should tell them where you have seen the dead animal, time etc. The police would then be able to give an incident number which is linked to that day's date and a number. It is also helpful to take photos of the body and make notes of anything that may help determine the cause of death. Any swan death found within the town (or anywhere for that matter) is a potential criminal offence or wildlife crime. It therefore important that any such deaths are reported to the police. The police have powers to enable investigations into these deaths to establish whether it is by natural causes (predators, disease etc) or whether humans have played any part - swans have been subjected to attacks in the past and this has been publicised on TV programmes such as Animal 24/7. We hope that this sort of thing has not arisen in New Alresford. More details will be published as and when we get them....
