|Alresford Greening Campaign is continuing - in spirit|
Since hearing on the radio outragous comments from the Environment Minister Owen 'kill a badger or two' Paterson pin his colours to the climate change denial mast I have decided to restart this small website.
The role of humans and human activity in the causation of rapid climate change or global warming has been confirmed for over 4 decades and it was recognised over 100 years before and it is still the biggest challenge that we face (though most people just ignore this fact but who can blame them?).
I am concentrating on my personal contribution to the problem - it is measured in carbon emissions per year. Last year I had a free energy assessment by WinAcc. It was really good actually as it provided useful information on what I can do in my house to help reduce our families carbon emissions at home.
It was also handy as at the time I was being pestered by Apple Home Improvements over double glazing or solar panels/water heating (please do not allow them in to your homes....).
I have to admit I have been tempted to install solar panels but after reading an excellent book by Ozzie Zehner called 'Green Illusions - the dirty secrets of alternative energy' I have decided that there is a far more effective way of dealing with climate change and it is not to go on producing more energy - through fossil fuels, nuclear or alternatives.
The key thing is that alternative energy can never provide our energy needs on our current consumption rates - this is going to go up year on year and Ozzie Zehner suggests that electric cars, wind turbines and other forms of alternative energy will not help reduce burning fossil fuels - in fact it may lead to more being burned. I personnally cannot afford the installation, running and maintenance of solar arrays etc. I am going to go for the simple steps at home which WinAcc has suggested (admittedly over 1 year ago)
I plan to report on how I do on this through this website.
There is so much to do in our town which can help reduce our pollution. One of these is the up and coming Town plan which I hope to get involved with over the course of the year as well.
If people would like to start up a community group I would be very supportive. I am a member of Winchester Action on Climate Change and I would encoruage people to join (see below). Right now there are plans with WInAcc and the Sunhill Infant/Junior School to build a greenhouse out of used plastic bottles. It is estimated that 1million+ bottles are used every year in Alresford. We need to collect 1500 to be able to build the greenhouse which will be used by the school to grow seedlings for their allotment. More news will follow so watch this space....
